2011 Birkebeinerrittet
The largest mountain bike race in the world has been held since 1993 and commemorates a trip made by the Birkebeiner loyalists to save the heir to the Norwegian throne, Håkon Håkonsson, in 1206. All participants carry a backpack weighing at least 3.5 kg, symbolizing the weight of the then one-year old heir. This year 25,000 participants signed up for the Birkebeinerrittet.

Dressing up is part of the fun for the world's largest timed fun run - and there were plenty of imaginative costumes at the 41st Sydney City2Surf. The 14km run from the central city to Bondi Beach attracted a record 85,000 entries and filled the streets with a stream of people for most of the morning. Men's winner Liam Adams crossed the line in 41m11s - before the last wave of the race had begun. Many entered the event to raise money for charities and this year it's estimated more than $A3 million was raised for worthy causes.

Munich Marathon
Chilly weather didn't stop more than 16,000 runners enjoying the 26th Munich Marathon. With a course that includes some of Munich's best sights, the finish has its own spectacle as runners pass through a curtain of mist, music and coloured lights to complete the last 400 metres inside the Munich Olympic Stadium. About 80,000 spectators supported participants from 93 countries as they completed distances in the full or half marathon, 10km or relay race.

Amsterdam Marathon
It was perfect running weather for the 36th Amsterdam Marathon; blue sky, autumn sunshine and almost no wind - and record numbers turned out to run in the marathon and shorter distances. The flat, fast course passes through some of the city's most attractive features.
This year six men finished under 2:07 although last year's course record still held. Ethiopian Tiki Gelana set a new women's record of 2:22:08 and Dutch runner Lornah Kiplagat earned herself a place at the London Olympic Games for her finish in 2:25:52.
The times confirm that Amsterdam Marathon is one of the fastest in the world and one that is also enjoyed by runners from throughout the world.
