  • Birkebeinerrittet is the world's largest mountain bike race - and every participant must carry a backpack of at least 3.5kg to honour the rescue in 1206 of 18 month old Prince Haakon Haakonsson. He became the king who united Norway.

  • Bupa Great North Run One in a million! Claimed to be the world's greatest half marathon, this year it became the first IAAF event in the world to achieve its millionth finish. And in the background every year is Newcastle's majestic Tyne Bridge

  • Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 Fierce wind and torrential rain didn't stop almost 21,000 riders completing the UK's biggest cycling sportive. One couple broke their ride and were married in Richmond Park before finishing the race.

  • Zermatt Marathon Starting in the lowest-lying mountain valley in Switzerland, and ending at 2585m on the highest-altitude finish line in Europe, this is the supreme alpine racing challenge.

  • 3 Ring Circus Roll up, Roll up, Roll up! Mountain biking events for all. Under the stars or under the sun. See wild trails tamed while riders juggle speed and stamina. All based at the Big Top event centre in Wingello State Forest, 2 hours from Sydney.

  • British 10k London Run London Eye is just one of many iconic highlights along the route of this amazing run. Piccadilly, Hyde Park, St James' Palace, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Bridge - and all roads traffic-free.

  • Blenheim Palace Triathlon Here's an event with a gorgeous view at every turn, a lake that begs to be swum in, a cycle circuit with plenty of interest, a running course that you'll want to walk around later and a superb castle in the background.

  • Ottawa Marathon Registrations rose and race records tumbled as Canada's biggest running event celebrated its 40th birthday. The 2-day running festival involved 47,500 participants, 2500 volunteers - and raised more than $625,000 for charities.

  • Great Wall Marathon - 5,164 steps into history. It's one of the world's toughest events. The muscle pain goes but the memories last forever. That is why it is possible to smile in some of this race's hardest parts - on China's Great Wall.
