  • Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore More than 53,000 participants joined the 2014 edition of this popular race. Haile Gebrselassie crossed the 10km finish line in third position for his first race in Singapore.

  • Vitality Bath Half Marathon Dressing up is half the fun of the run. Bride-to-be Laura Allen persuaded 12 of her 25-strong hen party to tackle this run wearing bridesmaid dresses. They finished in a visual symphony of colour.

  • Munich Marathon 100,000 spectators lined the streets of the Bavarian capital to support participants from a record 101 countries - all of them finishing inside the famous 1972 Olympic Stadium.

  • Toronto Waterfront Marathon First timers, seasoned runners and Boston qualifiers love this race. It's flat, fast and designed to make the most of the scenic Lake Ontario waterfront and harbour - plus Toronto's historic old town areas.

  • Melbourne Marathon You can’t beat a run on traffic-free streets, through pretty parkland, along the waterfront and past historic buildings in this beautiful city. The silence of the trams simply adds to the atmosphere.

  • Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon Ethiopian Tesfaye Abera (Bib 12) is in the pack at this stage but went on to win his first marathon in 2:09:46. The race is the largest in Asia, with special categories for senior citizens and disabled runners.

  • Ironman Barcelona 2,600 athletes fought a thrilling competition racing in the beautiful Costa del Maresme. Spanish athletes took first and second place but everyone was an iron man at the finish.

  • Bupa Great North Run One in a million! Claimed to be the world's greatest half marathon, this year it became the first IAAF event in the world to achieve its millionth finish. And in the background every year is Newcastle's majestic Tyne Bridge

  • Zermatt Marathon Starting in the lowest-lying mountain valley in Switzerland, and ending at 2585m on the highest-altitude finish line in Europe, this is the supreme alpine racing challenge.
